How NOT To Sell Your Product Or Yourself

This was something that happened a few years back but only now made me think of it. And it has to do with how people should NOT marketing themselves or their products. It seems really obvious but there are really clueless people out there.

How It Went Down

I was in a room of entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs. At the time, I was on the side of aspiring entrepreneurs who was just getting into the business scene. I had almost nothing of expertise to offer. At the front of the room were CEOs my church brought in to speak on various topics. I was there to learn as well as many of the others in attendance.

At the beginning, we were all asked to get up and introduced ourselves. It should be short, concise and let people know why you’re there. Mine was short and simple enough. There was one however who went on and on. The worst part of it was that he started handing out flyers in the middle of his introduction promoting his product!

His introduction felt like 10 minutes long. Not sure if he was embarrassed but I hell as sure was. How is that even an effective way to promote yourself? How many people would actually look at his dumb fliers and think they would like to buy from this guy.

There’s A Good Way And There’s A Really Bad Way

This was clearly a really bad way to promote. People don’t buy from anyone even if you have a great product. The impression this guy made was not worth even looking at the product he was promoting. There are still people out there who promote like this. There’s no dialogue with the potential customers, no enchantment, no questions to ask how he could help you solve your business problems.

Don’t promote like this guy. You’ll lose credibility very quickly in the business world. And the business world is not that big.
