Recently, we got on the Mario Armstrong show on Sirius XM channel 128. The way it happened is remarkable. That’s because the entire connection was setup on Twitter. Twitter is such a powerful networking tool for someone who know how to use it effectively. In this article, we’ll show you exactly the steps we took to get on the radio.

Have Something To Say

You have to have something remarkable to say. Remarkable, defined by Seth Godin in his book Purple Cow is something that is so awesome that it makes people want to make a remark about it. The iPhone when it first came out was remarkable. The iPad. We can even go way back in time and say both MS-Dos and Windows 95 was remarkable. We had something remarkable- Teen Business Summit.

Target Specific People

We targeted specific people that we wanted to reach out to based on their interests. We looked for people that were entrepreneurs. More so than that, we were looking for entrepreneurs that want to make an impact on youth and the future. Mario was one of those guys. If you just searched for his name on Google, he calls himself a “Youth Tech Motivator”. A great resource for finding such targeted interests is WeFollow.com.

With WeFollow, you can enter the tag “entrepreneur” and get a list of people who identify themselves as an entrepreneur on Twitter. Then the fun begins.

Reach out

We did this very well. We didn’t just message people and tell them about the summit (although we did that too).

1) We looked at each person’s profile, read a little bit about what they’re tweeting about to understand what they care about.

2) Then we jumped right into their conversation saying something of value. It could just be a remark about something they said.

3) We then introduced ourselves and told them about the summit. By establishing a rapport, they saw were weren’t salesmen looking to make a few bucks off an affiliate link* (Ha!).

*Note: For those who may not know, Twitter is full of spam and a lot of that is from internet marketers who hide their links behind a URL shortener like Bit.ly. The person reading the tweet can’t see what the link points to. They click not knowing that it could have potentially downloaded a cookie on their computer. The cookie tracks if you brought something from that link or not. If you did, the person who sent you the link makes a commission.

The power of Twitter! It’s been said that Twitter provides everyone direct access to celebrities. Well, we want to say it provides direct access to the media if you know how to use it correctly.

Final Thoughts

We reached out to dozens of media writers, entrepreneurs on Twitter. Not everyone responded. But you have to plant a lot of seeds.

The reason is because not every seed that you plant will grow. Some will be eaten by birds. Some will grow along with weeds that kill it. Some will not have the right foundation to fully grow. But only a few will actually grow.
