Default WYSIWYG Editors

Just curious, but, how do you people make your websites?

I know that the easiest thing would be to use a template, or some other limited-freedom tool, but what else would you do or recommend?

Currently, I am hand coding my pathetic half-website-that-does-nothing with php (mostly). What wysiwyg editors would you recommend, if any at all? How do they deal with php or other server-side-scripting?

I would like something to even up my work-load, but if it comes at the cost of my ability to get exactly what I want, I could just hand code...

Thanks in advance... to any or none... =]

edit: btw... If I wanted to change the title of this thread, how would I do that?

I'm bad with coding websites from scratch, too.

I don't think you can edit titles.

I've heard that Dreamweaver is one of the best WYSIWYG editing tools - however, it costs money. For free, I've used PHPDesigner 2007 (2007 edition is free), and EditPlus.

I was coding some scripts for a friend a while ago who used Dreamweaver, and it kept messing with various things that broke my scripts, it was very frustrating to have manually change things back to the way they were, regardlessly, should I be able to trust products like that to only mess with what I want them to?

Use text-only editors if you're worried about that. However, I thought that Dreamweaver didn't mess around with the code - one of the things I've heard positively about Dreamweaver. If not, it must do it much less than other programs like Frontpage.

Might have been at fault of my friend's, or some old bug long since fixed -- I don't know what version he was using -- but I can take your assurance for that... Or any good experiences.

One of the things that would be a must though is that I would be able to modify portions of html -- like in a header file -- and not have the program complain about it being incomplete, because eclipse does that, and I find it amusing that I put the html into an echo just to avoid that.

P.S. And do you have some sort of blank signature? The empty space looks awkward...

For websites, i usually code a template in a text editor, and constantly save and view with firefox. Then i get it into a CMS and use taht for adding content. I specifically like Modx, and sometimes contentarea. (though i think the project died a bit ago)

Nvu is a good free editor. Right now, the (unofficial) successor is "KompoZer" because Nvu isn't officially updated.

The main disadvantage of Nvu is that it doesn't support PHP/etc, but that's a minor issue.

If your planning on making ASP/ASP.NET web sites a good one is Microsoft Visual Web Developer Express Edition. Doesn't support php though.
