Really, all that is being asked on this thread is, what industries do you prefer to invest in, or — what do you invest in most? (Note: Even to the non-stock investors, you can say what industries you prefer to 'set-up shop' in
)Mine: - Resources - Some people stick solely to oil, or steel, or copper, I vary, as there isn't too much difference between the way they run. The companies values are mainly dependant on a 2 things: 1. The price of the commodity they produce... (which is calculated mainly on supply/demand) 2. The companies as individuals (I.e. New big customers etc.) - things which change every stock. - Technology Despite being an idiot when it comes to web design and such, I do use technology a lot, so when it comes to investing in this, I am betting on 'new ideas' or in other words, things I like which other people should too :P - Finance These are really investing in the market itself. If the stock exchange does well, that means the investment division of banks does well. It can also be judged on currency movements, and a quite important one: the rate of interest the central banks charge. Of course, I do invest in totally outrageous areas without any relevance to the above ^ I.e. In the past I have bought YUM!brands 'YUM' (fast food). But in general, I would say those 3 industries are my 'main' ones.

I just sold a CM (CIBC), a Canadian bank, today, though I rarely invest into finance. I primarily buy shares in technology companies, and have a particular interest in 'green' and medical tech. companies. I also bought Suncorp Energy and CNQ (Canadian Natural Resources) a few years ago, though I don't really like supporting dirty energy companies. I've been looking into buying into solar energy for quite some time now -- just not sure which company to go with.

In my opinion it is mainly investing in what you know best, like, or even what you happen to be good at! What normally happens is you just have a 'knack' for that area industry.
