It's so misleading.
Throughout the first months until the winter break we only need to go to class listening to what they have to say and primarely work in our studio. The hours are long, been waking up at 6h15 and getting home at 18h30 on every monday, tuesday (sometimes I even got home at 23h30), wednesday I'm lucky with only 2hours of class, thrusday one week is 4 hours in the afternoon, the other week 8 hours like monday and tuesday. And then friday was 7 hours for a long time, now it's just 3 hours in the afternoon. This might get close to your hours, or you may have even more, but how everything falls into eachother is a real pain for me right now. I survive from week to week, everytime I finish one task for that week I need to start the other one again. It just keeps on going because we get weekly revisions on our work. On top of that those theoretical classes' teachers give us extra assignements, which I could just stay on top of. But now at the last week coming before the break it all bunched together. I almost need to finish all my studio projects so I can show it and adjust the latest details during the break. Then I need to write a paper for the first time with all the legit stuff systems of harvard etc and I need to create 2 presentations about art... Did you notice I didn't even start about STUDYING for my exams? This means we need to fix those last studio project details in the break, but also study for the exams. This means we never actually get a break, even worse, breaks are harder work for us. I do take some free time, but it never satisfies me because I know everything that's waiting to be done. I know it is like this for many students, but seriously, be happy you don't get this practical work on top of your studies. (eventhough I would NEVER want to stop doing it like this, theoretical classes may drop for my part ).Are the other people in here also destroying themselves with school and having this panic every week again? Or is my course really hard compared to you? |

Sounds like you're having a pretty rough time. :S
I doubt I'd even manage to wake up at 6:15am myself. What exactly are you learning at that design school? Is it worth all the work? |

Not learning so much I couldn't do myself or really need in a future job. It's just to get the diploma (which is really useful here in Belgium).
What I learn can be useful, it's just that you learn for years and actually could write down all useful things on 2 sheets of paper or something. But hey, I'm halfway already ![]() |

At Iowa State, design students are unfamiliar with the phenomenon we normal people like to refer to as "sleep". Those who have part-time jobs exist on a whole 'nother plane.
