Hey guys.
I was hopin some of you might be able to give some insight to me about the SATs? For university I plan on going to the U.S because No.1 I prefer the style of American colleges and no 2 I'll most likely be moving back to the U.S around then anyway! I have absolutely no idea what's involved in them and as far as I know they're required to get into all colleges over there? What's involved in them ? I know you have subject tests as well as a main one, bu I don't no much else? How are scores divided ? What's a high score? what kind of difficulty level is it? When do you take them ? That kind of stuff I don't know! Any help would be great or any resources that you know of that will inform me? Thanks Stephen |

You can score between 200 and 800 on each section. So you can get a total SAT score of 2400. A high score would be above 650 on each one. As for the difficulty level, each section ranges from easy level to hard, the further you get into the test, the harder it gets. For test dates go to SAT International Test Dates - Dates for International SAT Test Takers NOTICE: You MUST take the SAT in order to get into a university here! The score you make (as well as the grades you have in high school)(and your GPA) will determine the university you may get excepted to. To get into a Ivy-league school(such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton ect.) you must have near perfect SAT scores AND pretty much all A's and have taken the most advanced courses available in your high school. Hope this helps! I take the SAT this year, I'm really nervous, this can make or break my whole life! ![]()

SAT's are still one part of the college admission process. Colleges now look a lot more into your extra activities- like whether you started a business, etc. The reason is because now, a lot of people can get really high SAT scores. So there needs to be something else that makes them stand apart.
I think the test has changed since I took it but I think the people who do well in the math section can think outside of the box to a particular problem. Most people (even myself) approach each problem linearly, meaning I would try to apply algorithms, and just grind the numbers until I arrive at the answer. But the questions towards the end usually lends itself to a quick solution if you can think outside the box. Either way, pick up a copy of the latest SAT practice tests and do them over and over. People who read naturally do well on the reading section (in my opinion). I did not do well back then because... well because I did not read =) |

Thanks for the advice ! School work shouldn't be too much of a problem I take the highest level possible for all of my subjects! I'm going to look into getting some test papers and start practicing!! I think it's having the right mix of extra curriculars will make or break your chances if you've got high test scores??

Leadership activities were always big. Find out if that's still the case. Call up the universities you want to attend and ask them about international students. Nowadays, I think it may be if you have a business, especially if you want to go into entrepreneurship. Which ones are you looking into?

If you are considering an elite college, consider taking a prep course. I used to teach a SAT course for Kaplan. It really helps people that aren't naturally good standardized test takers.

Are leadership activities just activities that you take the managing role in or are they particular area of activities! I've been offered a the lead positioning the school debating team but I don't know whether it's smart to take it, it may lead to me spreading myself to thin! I haven't chosen a particular university yet bit I'm looking for ones with strong computer science and business departments!

@stephenallen,
This is a plug for my school but RPI is definitely a good school with both strong computer science and entrepreneurship departments. Also, UVA is a top top notch school as well. Obviously, if you take something that spreads you too thin, that will harm your grades. You will need to ask each school. That's much much better than to assume that they like school activities vs business activities. I also agree with @Mcfroggin that taking a prep course is key. The SAT is all about how well you can take THAT specific test. |
