Default Dog Training

My fiance finally got her dog yesterday that she has been pestering me about since we moved in a year ago. Its a staffy cross something.

Anyone have any tips on training it. Never had a dog before. Been reading up on crate training which is supposed to be effective. Anyone use it before?

Dude... this is a huge niche in internet marketing. You can do a search for it and I'm sure you'll find some good information.

It depends, do you want to train for for trialing? hunting? just a house dog?

House dog. I didnt want the dog but since its here id prefer it be well house trained. It will be an outside dog but of course while its still young it will be sleeping inside.

I have a 10 month old husky x lab personally I took her to obedience, so I would really recommend getting into some kind of training class. I had one teacher that told me that the best way to fast track your dog to being toilet trained is to get up and take out each hour of the night and praise it when it goes. I personally thought this was a bit extreme, so I took my dog out every 2nd hour, and she has only had an accident inside twice

Depends on what type of dog it is and your lifestyle, but I just got my puppy (lab x border collie) in November, and we basically house trained her in less than a week by taking her outside at least once an hour, so she never had to worry and learned that 'outside' is the place to 'go to the bathroom'.

If it's a smaller breed, maybe crate training would work better, but what we did worked very well. Make sure he/she has lots of toys to chew on so that your furniture and shoes will mostly be left alone. Try not to push him/her around and DEFINITELY don't hit him. Holding him and looking in his eyes if he did something bad is one thing, but if you hit your dog he'll be afraid of you and other people -- it's basically the same as hitting a kid.

Anyways, if you have any questions ask Tak or myself . Good luck!

Yeah we arent hitting him. We are doing the crate training so that way he can sleep inside in it at night and we encourage him to go in there throughout the day when he sleeps but we dont force him, but he is usually going in there now anyway. Anytime he wakes up we take him outside and usually after an hour or 2 we take him out. We are trying to keep him outside as much as possible (im usually at work so its my fiance that spends most of the day outside with him).

We have also been looking after his sister as well as her owners have had to go to work so when she is over they are just both locked outside and will usually stay out there all day with no problems so that makes it easy to get him used to being outside. Still cries when we try to leave him outside by himself but after about 10minutes he just goes about his way.

We have had a few accidents inside (one about 5mins ago) but overall hasnt been too bad. He has been sick so it was expected.
