Default Hey guys

Hey all,

I am going to University in September and I have only a desktop. I need a laptop for university and I was just wondering what do you think I should do? Do you think I should sell my desktop then use the money to get a laptop?

Or do you think I should keep the desktop and just get a netbook. To make things clearer I am going to be studying web design at university.

That's a difficult question to answer. Will you be doing a lot of GRAPHIC design? If so, make sure you have a nice big monitor to work with. This could be your desktop monitor, or just an external monitor with your laptop. If you're going to be doing a lot of group work, you might want a laptop to bring to coding sessions. Again, you will need more monitor space than you think for coding - a netbook can work, but it just doesn't cut it for me.

Personally, I have a desktop with two monitors and a Macbook. If I have the choice, I pick the desktop every time. However, sometimes I like to get out of the room, so I pick the laptop for those occasions. The laptop also always goes with me to class so I can capture everything in Evernote.

If I were to give a blind recommendation, I'd say get a laptop and keep an extra monitor back at the dorm. This is the configuration that works for most students.

Well I will be doing graphics so I was thinking of getting a laptop but then buying a monitor for when I am at home, because I will be taking a laptop with me to university. If it was the case of getting a netbook I would use that at university, I am just unsure on what to do

If you're unsure, your best bet is probably to go with a laptop. So much work is done in groups/in class these days that it's nice to have the option of moving around. Plus, picking up a spare monitor will only run you about $150 (that's for a 22"-23" LCD). Also pick up a mouse, because a touchpad just doesn't cut it for graphic design.

I might just do that, because if I were to stick to a netbook I may run into a few problems lol, but thanks for your help.
